  • Messiah was originally intended to be a work for Easter and was premiered in the spring during the Lent season. By the 19th century, it had become a regular December staple.
  • All the proceeds from the premier on April 13, 1742 were donated to prisoners, orphans, and the sick. The performance raised 400 pounds, freeing 142 men from debtors’ prison.
