Youth Orchestra Director
Paul Luongo, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of the Whitman Orchestra, came to Walla Walla in 2012. Prior to this appointment, he served on the faculty of Valencia College in Orlando, FL. Dr. Luongo’s undergraduate studies were in music education at Stetson University (B.M.E. 1998). At the Florida State University, he received degrees in conducting (M.M. 2006) and musicology (M.M. 2006), culminating in a Ph.D. in musicology (2010).
During his time at Florida State, Luongo served as an assistant conductor of the University Philharmonia and the University Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work with the university ensembles, he also worked with the Tallahassee Symphony Youth Orchestra. Dr. Luongo’s primary scholarly interests consider the development of the American orchestra in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He has presented at various national and international conferences, and is currently preparing select orchestrations by Chicago Symphony Orchestra founder Theodore Thomas for publication by A-R Editions in their Recent Researches in American Music series. Paul Luongo currently serves on the board for the Western Division of the College Orchestra Directors Association.
Dr. Luongo fondly remembers his experiences as a member of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra and is thrilled to help create similar experiences in Walla Walla!
